Construction of Filoli commenced in 1915 for William Bowers Bourn II, a prominent gold mine owner and president of the Spring Valley Water Company, and his wife Agnes Moody Bourn. Following the deaths of the Bourns in the early 1930s, the estate was acquired in 1937 by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, owners of the Matson Navigation Company. The Roths further developed the gardens, adding significant horticultural elements and maintaining the property for 40 years. In 1975, Mrs. Roth donated the house, gardens, and 125 acres to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, ensuring its preservation and public accessibility as a historic site.
